Holl的立意是把新(xīn)馆设计成一个地下连贯的空间；而在地面上，通过五个造型各异的玻璃體(tǐ)(Glass Lenses)，把自然光線(xiàn)引入展室。Holl特别擅長(cháng)于空间的流动和光影的交叠，他(tā)想让每一位观众在参观展览的同时，能(néng)对博物(wù)馆的建筑也有(yǒu)一份独特的感觉。因為(wèi)新(xīn)馆采用(yòng)了特殊的玻璃幕墙——U型玻璃，所以建筑的外表和古典风格的老建筑形成了鲜明的对比。夜幕下，晶莹的建筑本身就是一件精美的艺术品。记得Holl自己说过，在他(tā)多(duō)年的设计生涯中，最大的挣扎就是如何使自己的作品能(néng)够按照设计的意图建成。且不说Holl最近10年在中國(guó)完成的项目，就是这个倾注了建筑师的心血，而且还得到博物(wù)馆大力支持的纳尔逊新(xīn)馆，在施工的精细方面，还是有(yǒu)些差强人意的。
